A theme can really set the tone for a party. With so many options, choosing the right one can be a bit overwhelming. A good theme can guide the direction you go for food, drinks, and decor. Once you choose a party theme, the rest of the planning process will be easier.  So where should you start?  Let’s break down what to consider when picking a party theme that fits your gathering.

The Why? The best place to start when choosing your party theme is to determine the reason or occasion for your event.  It may be something specific like a birthday or bridal shower, it might be a holiday or just be a fun get together with friends “just because.” Whatever the reason, let that help you decide on your party theme.

Who? If your party is centered around an individual, it’s very important to keep them in mind when choosing a theme.  Make it as personal as you can and include things they love. Consider things like…

  • Favorite food or drink?
  • Favorite things such as color, sports teams, or hobbies
  • For a younger guest of honor consider things like favorite characters or movies
  • Maybe it’s a milestone birthday – work that into your décor
  • Graduation?  Consider school colors and pictures of the guest growing up.

Who’s Coming? Not every theme is a match for your guest list, be sure to consider what will work best for everyone.  Remember, you want all your guest to enjoy themselves which means don’t choose a Ted Lasso viewing party theme unless all your guests are equally obsessed with the show (side note: the show is amazing and everyone should be obsessed????)

Budget.  I know, I know, nobody wants to think about the dreaded B word but if you want to plan a successful themed party you must factor it in. Staying within your budget may determine the theme. I promise, planning a budget friendly party will be so much less stressful for you.

Time. How much time do you have to plan the party? Your answer may pick the theme for you!  If it’s only a few days, it needs to be as simple as possible. If you have more time like a few weeks or even months then you can choose something a little more complicated.  Keep in mind, more complicated does not always equal a better party.

Reality. You need to be realistic and choose a theme you can make happen!  We would all love to throw an elaborate garden tea party for our fabulous friends but if you don’t have a garden, know how to cook or even like tea, this is probably not the best theme for you!  Stick to what you know and love and your party will shine.

Time and Season.  Look at your calendar and let it guide you when choosing your party theme. If your event is in late December then maybe you make it a holiday party.  Planning a July get together consider a 4th of July or summer theme.  Thinking of a noon start time, consider a brunch or BBQ.  Nobody wants to pull out a little black dress before 7:00 pm!

Now you know what to consider when choosing a party theme, blow are some of my favorite ideas that may work for you!

  • Brunch – one of my all-time favorites!
  • Dinner Party – remember what space is available and keep your guest list small.
  • Casual get together – think charcuterie boards, dips and finger food.
  • Bourbon & Beer – add in some BBQ and you are all set.
  • Wine & Cheese – keep it informal and fun, try new wines
  • BBQ – possibilities are endless here.  We like to grill and smoke various meats.
  • Holiday Party – we host one every year for family and friends.
  • Girls Night Happy Hour – apps, charcuterie boards and a fun signature cocktail
  • Outdoor Movie Night – load up on movie style candy, popcorn, and pizza
  • Birthday Party – endless possibilities, just remember who you are planning for.
  • Board Party – A DIY setup but a family favorite.  Think taco bar, salad bar, Italian board…
  • Cookie Fest – trust me, it’s a thing.  We do one every year at the holidays then anonymously drop off goodies to friends and families.
  • Bar Party – we happen to have an actual bar in our house but any space can be made into a bar!  Serve your bar food favorites like wings, fries and sliders

Honestly, I could go on and on, and maybe I will in another post???? At the end of the day while your party doesn’t technically need a theme, having one will elevate your party all while making the planning a lot easier.  Happy Planning!
